[abstract]
Aerosols play a major role in the global climate system and in atmospheric chemistry. They affect the concentrations of other important atmospheric constituents, such as ozone. A method named EARLINET is used to establish a quantitative statistical database of the horizontal, vertical, and temporal distributions of aerosols. It will help in understanding the physical and chemical processes related to these particles, their long-range transport and deposition, and the interaction of aerosols with clouds. The collected data will provide the basis for satellite missions employing laser remote sensing and will be used to improve the quality of a number of satellite retrieval systems.
